Description

The Pressing Pad Sewing Pattern is your next step toward achieving a high-end finish on every garment. This tool acts as a protective barrier, allowing you to safely apply firm pressure to hot fabrics and seams immediately after ironing while keeping your fingers safe from steam and burns.

By applying pressure as the fabric cools, the Pressing Pad “sets” the seams, ensuring they stay perfectly flat, crisp, and professional. It is also ideal for shaping contoured areas without leaving unwanted creases. This project is very straightforward, making it perfect for both beginners and experienced makers.

Pressing Pad Details & Key Features

  • Double-Layer Design: Features an outer fabric and a strong lining for a heavy-duty shell that handles high heat and pressure.
  • Deciduous Hardwood Filling: Packed tightly with fine sawdust from deciduous (hardwood) trees to absorb moisture and maintain a firm shape.
  • Seam Stabilizer: Helps “set” freshly ironed seams for a crisp, professional look.
  • Safety First: Protects your hands while you manipulate hot fabric and steam.
  • Beginner-Friendly: An easy, quick project that delivers professional results for any sewing room.

Materials & Sizing

You can easily use fabric scraps or small cuts for this project:

  • Outer Fabric: 25 cm (approx. 10″) of heat-resistant cotton or linen. This is enough to cut two 20 × 12 cm pieces. Ensure you cut along the grainline for stability.
  • Lining Fabric: 25 cm (approx. 10″) of firm cotton (like calico). You will need two 20 × 12 cm pieces cut along the grainline.
  • Thread: Strong sewing thread in a color that matches your fabric.
  • Filling: Fine sawdust from deciduous (hardwood) trees.

Tip: Clean sawdust for small rodents from pet stores is a perfect and easy-to-find option.

Finished Measurements:

  • Pressing Pad: 18 x 10 cm, Thickness 5 cm.

Tools & Supplies:

  • Sewing machine and hand sewing needle.
  • Steam iron or steam generator.
  • Fabric marker, tailor’s pins, and fabric scissors.
  • Funnel for stuffing: A regular funnel or a DIY version made from a plastic bottle neck to pour the sawdust inside.
